Fall 2017 Newsletter
In the Fall the active stage of the deer tick is the nymph. They are smaller than a pencil dot, and are responsible for 85% of human infections because they are difficult to detect. Of further concern is the steady migration of the Lone Star Tick into our geographical area. Lone Star ticks are found in woodlands, underbrush, and grassy areas. They can transmit Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tularemia, and Powassan Virus, which can cause a severe meat allergy in humans. Please visit our website, www.capeannvet.com, and explore our new tab “Fleas, Ticks and Heartworm Control” as well as the “Intestinal Parasites” tab for more information about pets and parasites. There is also a link to the U Mass testing lab if you are bitten by a tick and want it analyzed for carrying any of these diseases.
For dogs, we recommend YEAR ROUND oral ‘once a month tablets’ to control fleas and ticks and for cats we suggest either Bravecto or Frontline Topical. Nexgard, Simparica, and Bravecto are all isoxazoline insecticides. They block neurotransmitters in fleas and ticks at extremely low levels, resulting in hyperexcitation and death of the fleas and ticks. The effective level is too low to have an effect on mammals, which makes these products very safe. We also recommend Lyme Disease vaccinations for all dogs in our geographical area. For additional protection from ticks, we have permethrin impregnated bandanas and vests as well as Preventic collars.
Thanks to our parasite prevention sponsors, we are able to offer an additional instant $10 gift card towards any flea/tick or heartworm product when a fecal sample is submitted to test for intestinal parasites. Roundworms and Hookworms can survive in the soil year round, and pets can be infected without showing any clinical signs. We recommend year round Heartworm/Intestinal parasite protection. Products purchased at our office provide reimbursement for treatment should your pet become infected while on prevention medications such as Heartgard or Sentinel. (This coverage is not offered through on line reseller purchases). Treatment and retesting can cost $70-$100.
