Flea, Tick and Heartworm Control 2019
An additional instant $10 gift card is available at our office when you purchase any parasite prevention product at the same time a fecal sample is submitted to test for intestinal parasites. Our goal is to increase awareness of intestinal parasites that can commonly infect dogs and cats with no obvious clinical signs such as diarrhea. Roundworms and Hookworms can survive in the soil year round, which is why we recommend year round Heartworm/Intestinal parasite protection. Products purchased at our office provide reimbursement for treatment should any pet become infected while on prevention medications such as Heartgard or Interceptor Plus. (This coverage is not offered for on line purchases)
Please click on the PARASITES link below for the latest information about Ticks, Fleas, Heartworms and Intestinal parasites. The Pets and Parasites page is sponsored by the Companion Animal Parasite Council. We are seeing new species of ticks, and an increase in tick borne diseases.
If you find a tick on yourself, a family member, or your pet and want to have it analyzed, click on the TICK REPORT link below to access the testing lab at U Mass/Amherst. You can also access the "Tick Encounter" website at www.tickencounter.org for additional information about protective clothing and other protective measures for all family members.
2019 FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION RECOMMENDATIONS
We recommend all year round oral once a month tablets for dogs for flea and tick control. Nexgard, Simparica and Credelio are all isoxazoline insecticides. They block neurotransmitters in insects and ticks at extremely low levels, resulting in hyperexcitation and death. The effective level is too low to have an effect on mammals, which makes these products very safe. We also recommend Lyme Disease vaccinations for all dogs in our geographical area. Besides Lyme Disease, ticks in our area also carry Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Babesiosis. All of these diseases may also infect humans, so good tick prevention is essential to decrease the possibility of ticks being brought into the house.
We are pleased to offer Credelio, a new monthly oral tablet to control fleas and ticks on dogs. Like our other preventives, it belongs to the isoxazoline group, a neurotoxin to insects and ticks at an extremely low dose, and can be given to dogs at 8 weeks of age. One advantage is Credelio's ability to begin killing fleas and ticks within 4 hours, thus helping to prevent infections such as Anaplasmosis that can be transmitted sooner than Lyme disease infections. Credelio has a wide safety margin and there are no contraindications for it's use. Please click on the Credelio link below for more information and the $50 rebate that is available.
